Fundamentals of Health Technology Assessment

Our comprehensive online course on the Fundamentals of Health Technology Assessment (HTA) is designed to equip professionals with essential knowledge and skills in this field. Evidence synthesis and economic evaluation play a crucial role in healthcare decision-making, aiding synthesizing and comparing health outcomes and costs utilizing evidence to inform better decisions. In this program, you will understand the process and structure of Health Technology Assessment and see how evidence synthesis and economic evaluation are deployed.


Target audience: This course is designed for professionals working in the healthcare sector who seek to deepen their knowledge and understanding of Health Technology Assessment, evidence synthesis  and economic evaluations. It is also aimed at those who wish to learn more about HTA as a tool to be applied to inform decision-making for the allocation of health resources in a more efficient and informed manner.

Prerequisite knowledge: This is an introductory level course. No prerequisite knowledge is required, making this course accessible to all healthcare and decision-making professionals interested in HTA, evidence synthesis and health economics. 


Modality: The course is entirely virtual and mostly asynchronic, conducted through the Institute for Clinical Effectiveness and Health Policy online campus. 

There are four scheduled synchronic encounters to engage with peers and tutors, which are relevant for comprehensive learning and participation in integrative group activities.

Hours: The total course duration is 96 hours, distributed across 8 modules.

Weeks: The course spans across 18 weeks, with 8 biweekly modules A two-week break is planned in the middle of the course.

General Objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Exhibit a comprehensive understanding of the core principles and processes of Health Technology Assessment (HTA).
  • Demonstrate proficiency in the use of assessment tools commonly employed in HTA.
  • Achieve basic knowledge in the assessment of evidence quality using the GRADE approach.
  • Articulate the process and structure of economic evaluation within the context of HTA.

General Content

The program consists of 8 modules, each with videos, mandatory readings, and complementary materials. 

Each module includes an activity guide, discussion case, and a self-evaluation questionnaire. IECS staff provides personalized mentoring throughout the program 

Additionally, a forum is open throughout the course for consultation, discussion, networking and debate on the topics covered. It will be an excellent networking opportunity with others interested in the field of HTA and decision making.
